Blackbaud BlogsCheck Reprint Blues
pIt#39;s inevitable; you strongwill/strong need to reprint a check at some point in your FE user career. In many cases, it won#39;t even be your fault. The blame will lie on the employee or vendor that misplaced the check, the USPS for losing the check, or your printer for eating the paper. So what do you do? The answer depends on your response to the following question: Do you need to use the same check number?/p
pstrongYes, I need to use the same check number. /strongbr /If the check either never left the office or did not print, you can reuse the same check number. You#39;ll need to first a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/kb/index?page=contentamp;id=BB59007"void/a and a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/kb/index?page=contentamp;id=BB53728"purge/a the check. Voiding the check frees up the invoice or calculation and purging frees up the check number to be used again. Now you#39;re ready to reprint the check using your normal process. The only difference is you#39;ll need to change the starting payment number on the Format tab of the Create Payments screen before you print the check./p
pstrongNo, I need to use a new check number./strong br /When you use pre-printed check stock or put a stop payment on a lost check, you#39;ll want to keep the original in your bank register for a paper trail. In this is the case, you#39;ll just need to a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/kb/index?page=contentamp;id=BB59007"void/a the check and then print the new check as usual./p
pDo you have a check question? Leave a comment below and we#39;ll work together to quickly post the answer. Talk to you soon!/pimg src="http://forums.blackbaud.com/aggbug.aspx?PostID=153048" width="1" height="1"

Why Do My Taxes Look Like That? (Part 2)
pWelcome to the second installment of “Why do my taxes look like that?”! Last time we went over how to find the annual taxable wages (or adjusted gross wage) and how to find the federal income tax deduction. This time we’re going to talk about Medicare, Social Security and FUTA. /p
pWe will need the adjusted gross wages for this as well. We’ll use Zelda as our example again. Her adjusted gross wages are $37,000./p
pFirst let’s look at Social Security. To find the pieces we need next, open the Federal tax table and select the Social Security tab. Note the rate and the limit. For 2010 the rate is 6.2m, and the limit is $106,800.00./p
pTo find out how much Social Security is taken out for Zelda, we take 6.2% of $37,000 for a total of $2,294. The same way we did with the federal, we can divide this number by 24 pay periods to get $95.58 per check./p
pWhat is the limit for then? The limit places a cap on how much Social Security tax can be taken out for an employee. It’s the maximum wages subject to Social Security taxes. So if you have employees that get paid more than $106,800 annually then part way through the year their Social Security tax will stop deducting. The maximum Social Security tax any employee should have taken out is $6,621.60, give or take some cents for rounding./p
pFor Medicare we want to look at the Medicare tab of the Federal tax table. For 2010 the rate is 1.45. Same as we’ve done so far, we take 1.45% of $37,000 for a total of $536.50. Divide that by 24 to get $22.35 of Medicare tax per check./p
pFor both Medicare and Social Security, the calculation for the employer portion is the same as for the employee portion. In general those numbers should always match./p
pFUTA calculates much the same way Social Security does. We can find the information on the FUTA tab of the tax table. The rate for 2010 is 6.2, and the limit is $7,000. For Zelda the FUTA total would be 6.2% of $37,000, which is $2,294. So that means she gets $95.58 each month just like Social Security. The difference is that because the limit here is lower than $37,000. FUTA will stop deducting when it reaches the maximum, which is 6.2% of $7,000, or $434./p
pUnlike Social Security and Medicare, FUTA is an employer only tax and will not deduct anything from the check itself./p
pThat’s all for this time! Next time we will go over Advanced EIC and Non Resident Alien./pimg src="http://forums.blackbaud.com/aggbug.aspx?PostID=151200" width="1" height="1"

News You Can Use: End of Support for ICVerify
pWe recently sent a message to the primary contacts and web administrators for all organizations that use The Raiser#39;s Edge announcing that support for a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/kb/index?page=contentamp;id=BB126" target="_new"ICVerify/a will end on July 15, 2011. End of support means we will no longer test software releases or address product issues with ICVerify, but we will continue to answer your questions about ICVerify integration./p
pIf your organization uses a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/kb/index?page=contentamp;id=BB142121" target="_new"IATS/a to process payments electronically, or does not use The Raiser#39;s Edge for payment processing, this change does not affect your organization. This change affects only organizations that use ICVerify to authorize credit card donations in The Raiser#39;s Edge./p
pWe are also introducing a new payment processing service called Blackbaud Merchant Services, an all-inclusive gateway which encrypts sensitive information and securely processes transactions. Contact your a href="mailto:solutions@blackbaud.com?subject=Blackbaud%20Merchant%20Services" target="_new"Account Manager/a for more information about Blackbaud Merchant Services./p

Constituent Corner: Solicit Codes
pa href="http://www.layoutsville.com/images/graphics/callme2yb6243.gif" target="_blank"img style="WIDTH:328px;HEIGHT:362px;" alt="callme" hspace="50" src="http://www.layoutsville.com/images/graphics/callme2yb6243.gif" align="right" border="0" //a /p
pThirty years ago, a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blondie_(band)" target="_new"Blondie/a made it clear that it was okay to quot;Call Mequot;, but that isn#39;t necessarily the case for your constituents. To make it easy to keep track of how constituents prefer to be contacted, you can add solicit codes on a constituent#39;s Bio 1 tab./p
pA solicit code tells you that a constituent has certain rules or conditions regarding how you should approach them. Solicit codes typically include simple instructinos such as quot;Send No Mailquot;, quot;Do not phone at workquot;, quot;Do not phone after 6:00 p.mquot;, quot;Do not phone on weekends, quot; or even quot;Do not solicit.quot;/p
pTo add a solicit code, type it directly in the Bio 1 tab#39;s Solicit code field or click the words Solicit code to open the solicit code screen to make your selection. You can also open this screen by placing your cursor in the field and pressing F7./p
pIn addition to providing an indicator on constituent records, the solicit code field can also be used to filter mailings. For instance, in Labels, you can exclude constituents with the quot;Send No Mailquot; solicit code by going to the Filters tab and selecting Exclude Selected under Filter Options next to Solicit Codes. By clicking the binoculars under Selected Filters, you will open Selected Solicit Codes screen. From there, highlight quot;Send No Mailquot;, move it into the Exclude these entries frame, and click OK. Now constituents with this solicit code will be excluded from your mailing./p
pRead more about Solicit Codes in Knowledgebase solution a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/kb/index?page=contentamp;id=BB24742" target="_new"BB24742/a and in the a href="http://forums.blackbaud.com/tags/solicit+codes/default.aspx" target="_new"forums/a. Obligations Playing Hide and Seek?
pDo you feel like your obligations are playing hide and seek with you? I must admit, some obligations act like kids and tend to wander off after posting, changing their stage, or a system failure. What#39;s the one thing that always brings kids out of hiding? That#39;s right, nbsp;the ice cream truck! For obligations, the ice cream trucknbsp;is the Clear AP Flags utility. img border="0" hspace="5" alt="Clear AP Flags truck" align="right" src="http://www.blackbaud.com/images/blogs/apflags.gif" width="175" height="137" //p
pBefore you can clear the flags, request all users to log out of AP. Then, in division 00 - System Administration, Division Maintenance, highlight the division with the issue and click Clear AP Flags. Hopefully you#39;ll receive the message, No in-use flags were found for Division ## (where ## is your division number), No exception report was created. At this point the kids have come back out to play and can be found in their respective folder. /p
pInstead of the above message, you may get one that says, No in-use flags were cleared for Division ##. An exception report OTFLAG has been created. Don#39;t worry, your kids are not lost, they just don#39;t like ice cream and need a bit more coaxing to come out. To find them, open the OTFLAG.L## report in Print Manager. This report shows you the obligations in pending folders and the user that was working with them. Then, log into AP as the specific usersnbsp;and either post the obligations or remove them. After adjusting the obligations locked by individual users, run the Clear AP Flags utility again and all kids should be in the open and ready to play. /p
pTalk to you soon!/pimg src="http://forums.blackbaud.com/aggbug.aspx?PostID=152133" width="1" height="1"

Support Roundtable: The Raiser's Edge 7.91: What You Need to Know QA (7/21/10)
pHere are the questions we received in yesterday#39;s session of our Support Roundtable a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/support/roundtables/raisersedge.aspx" target="_new"The Raiser’s Edge 7.91 Update: New Features and Frequently Asked Questions/a. If you missed the session, you can still a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/support/roundtables/raisersedge.aspx" target="_new"view the recording and PowerPoint presentation/a./p
pstrongQ:/strong We have Blackbaud NetCommunity and accept recurring gifts. Will we still be able to download credit card information to process recurring gifts?br /strongA:/strong If you use Blackbaud Payment Services to store credit card information, Recurring Gift processing will not change after the update. This is true for both recurring gifts downloaded through Blackbaud NetCommunity or NetSolutions, as well as recurring gifts entered manually in The Raiser#39;s Edge./p
pstrongQ:/strong Do we need to apply any patches after 7.91 is installed?br /strongA:/strong Updating to the latest patch isn#39;t required, but we do recommend installing the latest patch, which include several critical fixes./p
pstrongQ:/strong What can you tell us about the end of support for ICVerify and also Blackbaud Merchant Services?br /strongA:/strong Support for ICVerify will end on July 15, 2011. This means that any future releases of ICVerify will not be tested with Blackbaud products, but we can still answer functionality and integration questions. Blackbaud Merchant Services is our new payment gateway. For more information, contact your a href="mailto:solutions@blackbaud.com?subject=Blackbaud%20Merchant%20Services" target="_new"Account Manager/a./p
pstrongQ:/strong How soon should we update to Blackbaud NetCommunity to version 6.10 after updating to The Raiser#39;s Edge 7.91?br /strongA:/strong If you integrate The Raiser#39;s Edge with Blackbaud NetCommunity, you must update to Blackbaud NetCommunity 6.10 first and then immediately update to The Raiser#39;s Edge 7.91./p
pstrongQ:/strong I know that to accept donations online with NetDonors you must add an account to Config, Business Rules, Merchant Accounts. If you want to process credit cards in Batch using IATS, do you also have to do this?br /strongA:/strong Yes, a Merchant Account must be added for any kind of credit card processing in The Raiser#39;s Edge./p
pstrongQ:/strong Is there a deadline for updating to The Raiser#39;s Edge 7.91?br /strongA:/strong There is not a Blackbaud-imposed deadline to update to The Raiser#39;s Edge 7.91. For most merchants, the deadlines for validating compliance with the PCI DSS have already passed. You should check with your acquirer and/or merchant bank to check if any specific deadlines apply to you. If you do not update, contact a a href="http://www.pcisecuritystandards.org/pdfs/pci_qsa_list.pdf" target="_new"Qualified Security Assessor/a for advice on how to secure your credit card data and authorize credit card transactions in accordance with PCI DSS./p
pstrongQ:/strong What additional setup is required for The Raiser#39;s Edge to communicate with BBPS?br /strongA:/strong Review the Knowledgebase solutions below for additional setup:br /br /
ul
lia href="http://www.blackbaud.com/kb/index?page=contentamp;id=BB713436" target="_new"What is the hostname of the Blackbaud Payment Service servers?/a/li
lia href="http://www.blackbaud.com/kb/index?page=contentamp;id=BB701162" target="_new"IP Addresses for the Blackbaud Payment Service (BBPS)/a/li
lia href="http://www.blackbaud.com/kb/index?page=contentamp;id=BB616725" target="_new"What ports need to be opened to access the Blackbaud Payment Service (BBPS)?/a/li/ul
pstrongQ:/strong Once credit card numbers are stored with BBPS, will we be able to view that information?br /strongA:/strong No, this information is no longer visible, which is a requirement for PCI DSS compliance. We do allow a one-time data dump if your organization ever chooses to leave Blackbaud./p
pstrongQ:/strong We have multiple Raiser#39;s Edge databases. Do we need separate BBPS accounts for each of the database?br /strongA:/strong No, each organization uses a single BBPS account./p
pstrongQ:/strong If we don#39;t process credit cards in The Raiser#39;s Edge, do you suggest that we update to version 7.91?br /strongA:/strong Updating to The Raiser#39;s Edge 7.91 is not required. The new version does contain additional features and software fixes that are only available with the update./p
pstrongQ:/strong What is the next version of The Raiser#39;s Edge? Will it be on the Infinity platform?br /strongA:/strong This has not been determined at this time./p
pstrongQ:/strong We currently run The Raiser#39;s Edge 7.85. We have already truncated our credit card numbers to the last four digits to meet our processor#39;s PCI DSS deadline prior to updating to version 7.91. Will we lose this reference when we update to 7.91, or will BBPS recognize that it#39;s not a full credit-card number?br /strongA:/strong The last 4 digits will be displayed in The Raiser#39;s Edge 7.91, preceded by question marks (ex: ????????????1234) to indicate that they are not stored in BBPS./pimg src="http://forums.blackbaud.com/aggbug.aspx?PostID=152134" width="1" height="1"

Coming Soon for ResearchPoint - Extended Networks for Relationships
pquot; What about your friends?quot; That#39;s whatnbsp;our usersnbsp;have been asking Target Analytics as they look fornbsp;a resource to identify business and nonprofit connections. span style="FONT-FAMILY:#39;Arial#39;,#39;sans-serif#39;;FONT-SIZE:10pt;mso-ansi-language:EN-US;mso-fareast-font-family:#39;Times New Roman#39;;mso-fareast-language:EN-US;mso-bidi-language:AR-SA;"Sometimes it takes knowing who your prospect knows to get the inside track. span style="FONT-FAMILY:#39;Arial#39;,#39;sans-serif#39;;FONT-SIZE:10pt;mso-ansi-language:EN-US;mso-fareast-font-family:#39;Times New Roman#39;;mso-fareast-language:EN-US;mso-bidi-language:AR-SA;"Having a good relationship with a friend or a co-worker can help a fundraiser reach other like-minded individuals, introduce the organization and begin the cultivation process. Sometimes, a fundraiser finds these relationships from events or functions they attend, and other times they look to the prospect researcher to identify these links from their screening tools./span/span/p
pSo, here#39;s a sneak peak at the August release of ResearchPoint which will include a newly added Extended Networks feature. This long awaited resource uses confirmed details found from Dun amp; Bradstreetnbsp;and GuideStar and connects the dots between your prospects, business colleagues, nbsp;and peers who serve with them on nonprofit boards./p
pWe#39;d love to hear your feedback about this tool, so make sure you jump right in after the release to identify the relationships in your ResearchPoint system./p

Getting started with the RE7 API and VB.NET (Part II)
pThis post will continue the example that we started in a title="Part I" href="http://forums.blackbaud.com/blogs/infinity/archive/2010/07/14/Getting-started-with-the-RE7-API-and-VB.NET-Part-1.aspx" target="_blank"Part I/a of this series. When we left off, we had created a basic form designed to add a new individual record and a procedure to generate our Raiser#39;s Edge 7nbsp;session context. Next we#39;ll need to write the code that takes the data entered on the form and passes it to The Raiser#39;s Edge object that handles constituents (CRecord)./p

pA couple things to highlight here:/font/font/font/p
p1. The InitREAPI() call points to the procedure that we created in part I/p
p2. Note we set for fields are based Name that you give to text boxes the Form Designer. These values may be different in your code depending on how they were named.
p3. The call to System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ReleaseComObject is probably the most overlooked part of using a COM API in a .NET project. This will release the memory used by the object back to the operating system similar to how setting an object to Nothing works in Visual Basic 6. Skipping this stepnbsp;can lead to memory and performance problems in your applications./p
p4. The call to CloseREAPI() references another procedure that I created in another module along with InitREAPI(). Here is the code for CloseREAPI():/pfont size="2" face="Consolas"font size="2" face="Consolas"/font/fontfont color="#0000ff" size="2" face="Consolas"font color="#0000ff" size="2" face="Consolas"font color="#0000ff" size="2" face="Consolas"Public/font/font/fontfont size="2" face="Consolas"font size="2" face="Consolas" /font/fontfont color="#0000ff" size="2" face="Consolas"font color="#0000ff" size="2" face="Consolas"font color="#0000ff" size="2" face="Consolas"Sub/font/font/fontfont size="2" face="Consolas"font size="2" face="Consolas" CloseREAPI()/font/font/font/fontfont size="2" face="Consolas"font size="2" face="Consolas"

p/font/font/fontOnce all of that is in place, we should be able to compile the code and add constituents through the new application. While this is a pretty simple example, adding additional fields to the form and the API code should be pretty straightforward./p

Cultivating Lifelong Donors: Stewardship and the Fundraising Pyramid Web Seminar Series
pThis free, four-part web seminar series, Cultivating Lifelong Donors: Stewardship and the Fundraising Pyramid, helps nonprofits set strategies for building giving programs from engagement up through ultimate giving. The key thread through the series is stewarding supporters at all levels of the fundraising pyramid...even before a gift is made. Blackbaud nonprofit experts developed the seminars to cover a broad range of topics based on their vast experience in the nonprofit world. Each session is designed to build on the content from the previous session, so you can get a full overview with the complete series or concentrate on the sessions that interest you the most...all with the ultimate goal of helping you to maximize fundraising results.nbsp;a href="https://www124.livemeeting.com/lrs/1100003672/Registration.aspx?pageName=9l5rx42gqpd046s3"Register now/a.br /br /bPart 1 - Get Engaged: Donor Engagement Through Social Mediabr //biWednesday, August 4, 1:00 p.m. ETbr //iHaving a social media strategy is not its own objective. Rather, social media strategies can support your existing objectives. Reflect on your organization#39;s current objectives: Do you want to cultivate supporter relationships, build cause awareness, do online fundraising, or connect with new supporters? pUnderstanding donor passion is something Chuck believes is vitally important for nonprofits to succeed. He also has proven time and time again how simply calling donors and asking them why they gave can be tremendously valuable.br //p
pChuck recently spoke at the a href="http://www.nationalconvention.org.uk/"Institute of Fundraising#39;s National Convention/a in London. Howard Lake from a href="http://fundraising.co.uk/"Fundraising UK/a recorded a portion of Chuck#39;s presentation and posted it online. Here are two very good videos worth watching:br //p

pDo you have a donor love meter? Do you do anything with it? Why not? When is the last time you called a donor to ask them why they gave? Why not? /p
pThis all sounds very simple — because it is. So what is stopping you from doing something that does improve results?br //p
