Blackbaud BlogsSupport Roundtable: The Raiser's Edge 7.91: What You Need to Know QA (7/21/10)
pHere are the questions we received in yesterday#39;s session of our Support Roundtable a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/support/roundtables/raisersedge.aspx" target="_new"The Raiser’s Edge 7.91 Update: New Features and Frequently Asked Questions/a. If you missed the session, you can still a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/support/roundtables/raisersedge.aspx" target="_new"view the recording and PowerPoint presentation/a./p
pstrongQ:/strong We have Blackbaud NetCommunity and accept recurring gifts. Will we still be able to download credit card information to process recurring gifts?br /strongA:/strong If you use Blackbaud Payment Services to store credit card information, Recurring Gift processing will not change after the update. This is true for both recurring gifts downloaded through Blackbaud NetCommunity or NetSolutions, as well as recurring gifts entered manually in The Raiser#39;s Edge./p
pstrongQ:/strong Do we need to apply any patches after 7.91 is installed?br /strongA:/strong Updating to the latest patch isn#39;t required, but we do recommend installing the latest patch, which include several critical fixes./p
pstrongQ:/strong What can you tell us about the end of support for ICVerify and also Blackbaud Merchant Services?br /strongA:/strong Support for ICVerify will end on July 15, 2011. This means that any future releases of ICVerify will not be tested with Blackbaud products, but we can still answer functionality and integration questions. Blackbaud Merchant Services is our new payment gateway. For more information, contact your a href="mailto:solutions@blackbaud.com?subject=Blackbaud%20Merchant%20Services" target="_new"Account Manager/a./p
pstrongQ:/strong How soon should we update to Blackbaud NetCommunity to version 6.10 after updating to The Raiser#39;s Edge 7.91?br /strongA:/strong If you integrate The Raiser#39;s Edge with Blackbaud NetCommunity, you must update to Blackbaud NetCommunity 6.10 first and then immediately update to The Raiser#39;s Edge 7.91./p
pstrongQ:/strong I know that to accept donations online with NetDonors you must add an account to Config, Business Rules, Merchant Accounts. If you want to process credit cards in Batch using IATS, do you also have to do this?br /strongA:/strong Yes, a Merchant Account must be added for any kind of credit card processing in The Raiser#39;s Edge./p
pstrongQ:/strong Is there a deadline for updating to The Raiser#39;s Edge 7.91?br /strongA:/strong There is not a Blackbaud-imposed deadline to update to The Raiser#39;s Edge 7.91. For most merchants, the deadlines for validating compliance with the PCI DSS have already passed. You should check with your acquirer and/or merchant bank to check if any specific deadlines apply to you. If you do not update, contact a a href="http://www.pcisecuritystandards.org/pdfs/pci_qsa_list.pdf" target="_new"Qualified Security Assessor/a for advice on how to secure your credit card data and authorize credit card transactions in accordance with PCI DSS./p
pstrongQ:/strong What additional setup is required for The Raiser#39;s Edge to communicate with BBPS?br /strongA:/strong Review the Knowledgebase solutions below for additional setup:br /br /
ul
lia href="http://www.blackbaud.com/kb/index?page=contentamp;id=BB713436" target="_new"What is the hostname of the Blackbaud Payment Service servers?/a/li
lia href="http://www.blackbaud.com/kb/index?page=contentamp;id=BB701162" target="_new"IP Addresses for the Blackbaud Payment Service (BBPS)/a/li
lia href="http://www.blackbaud.com/kb/index?page=contentamp;id=BB616725" target="_new"What ports need to be opened to access the Blackbaud Payment Service (BBPS)?/a/li/ul
pstrongQ:/strong Once credit card numbers are stored with BBPS, will we be able to view that information?br /strongA:/strong No, this information is no longer visible, which is a requirement for PCI DSS compliance. We do allow a one-time data dump if your organization ever chooses to leave Blackbaud./p
pstrongQ:/strong We have multiple Raiser#39;s Edge databases. Do we need separate BBPS accounts for each of the database?br /strongA:/strong No, each organization uses a single BBPS account./p
pstrongQ:/strong If we don#39;t process credit cards in The Raiser#39;s Edge, do you suggest that we update to version 7.91?br /strongA:/strong Updating to The Raiser#39;s Edge 7.91 is not required. The new version does contain additional features and software fixes that are only available with the update./p
pstrongQ:/strong What is the next version of The Raiser#39;s Edge? Will it be on the Infinity platform?br /strongA:/strong This has not been determined at this time./p
pstrongQ:/strong We currently run The Raiser#39;s Edge 7.85. We have already truncated our credit card numbers to the last four digits to meet our processor#39;s PCI DSS deadline prior to updating to version 7.91. Will we lose this reference when we update to 7.91, or will BBPS recognize that it#39;s not a full credit-card number?br /strongA:/strong The last 4 digits will be displayed in The Raiser#39;s Edge 7.91, preceded by question marks (ex: ????????????1234) to indicate that they are not stored in BBPS./pimg src="http://forums.blackbaud.com/aggbug.aspx?PostID=152134" width="1" height="1"

Coming Soon for ResearchPoint - Extended Networks for Relationships
pquot; What about your friends?quot; That#39;s whatnbsp;our usersnbsp;have been asking Target Analytics as they look fornbsp;a resource to identify business and nonprofit connections. span style="FONT-FAMILY:#39;Arial#39;,#39;sans-serif#39;;FONT-SIZE:10pt;mso-ansi-language:EN-US;mso-fareast-font-family:#39;Times New Roman#39;;mso-fareast-language:EN-US;mso-bidi-language:AR-SA;"Sometimes it takes knowing who your prospect knows to get the inside track. span style="FONT-FAMILY:#39;Arial#39;,#39;sans-serif#39;;FONT-SIZE:10pt;mso-ansi-language:EN-US;mso-fareast-font-family:#39;Times New Roman#39;;mso-fareast-language:EN-US;mso-bidi-language:AR-SA;"Having a good relationship with a friend or a co-worker can help a fundraiser reach other like-minded individuals, introduce the organization and begin the cultivation process. Sometimes, a fundraiser finds these relationships from events or functions they attend, and other times they look to the prospect researcher to identify these links from their screening tools./span/span/p
pSo, here#39;s a sneak peak at the August release of ResearchPoint which will include a newly added Extended Networks feature. This long awaited resource uses confirmed details found from Dun amp; Bradstreetnbsp;and GuideStar and connects the dots between your prospects, business colleagues, nbsp;and peers who serve with them on nonprofit boards./p
pWe#39;d love to hear your feedback about this tool, so make sure you jump right in after the release to identify the relationships in your ResearchPoint system./p

Getting started with the RE7 API and VB.NET (Part II)
pThis post will continue the example that we started in a title="Part I" href="http://forums.blackbaud.com/blogs/infinity/archive/2010/07/14/Getting-started-with-the-RE7-API-and-VB.NET-Part-1.aspx" target="_blank"Part I/a of this series. When we left off, we had created a basic form designed to add a new individual record and a procedure to generate our Raiser#39;s Edge 7nbsp;session context. Next we#39;ll need to write the code that takes the data entered on the form and passes it to The Raiser#39;s Edge object that handles constituents (CRecord)./p

pA couple things to highlight here:/font/font/font/p
p1. The InitREAPI() call points to the procedure that we created in part I/p
p2. Note we set for fields are based Name that you give to text boxes the Form Designer. These values may be different in your code depending on how they were named.
p3. The call to System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ReleaseComObject is probably the most overlooked part of using a COM API in a .NET project. This will release the memory used by the object back to the operating system similar to how setting an object to Nothing works in Visual Basic 6. Skipping this stepnbsp;can lead to memory and performance problems in your applications./p
p4. The call to CloseREAPI() references another procedure that I created in another module along with InitREAPI(). Here is the code for CloseREAPI():/pfont size="2" face="Consolas"font size="2" face="Consolas"/font/fontfont color="#0000ff" size="2" face="Consolas"font color="#0000ff" size="2" face="Consolas"font color="#0000ff" size="2" face="Consolas"Public/font/font/fontfont size="2" face="Consolas"font size="2" face="Consolas" /font/fontfont color="#0000ff" size="2" face="Consolas"font color="#0000ff" size="2" face="Consolas"font color="#0000ff" size="2" face="Consolas"Sub/font/font/fontfont size="2" face="Consolas"font size="2" face="Consolas" CloseREAPI()/font/font/font/fontfont size="2" face="Consolas"font size="2" face="Consolas"

Cultivating Lifelong Donors: Stewardship and the Fundraising Pyramid Web Seminar Series
pThis free, four-part web seminar series, Cultivating Lifelong Donors: Stewardship and the Fundraising Pyramid, helps nonprofits set strategies for building giving programs from engagement up through ultimate giving. The key thread through the series is stewarding supporters at all levels of the fundraising pyramid...even before a gift is made. Blackbaud nonprofit experts developed the seminars to cover a broad range of topics based on their vast experience in the nonprofit world. Each session is designed to build on the content from the previous session, so you can get a full overview with the complete series or concentrate on the sessions that interest you the most...all with the ultimate goal of helping you to maximize fundraising results.nbsp;a href="https://www124.livemeeting.com/lrs/1100003672/Registration.aspx?pageName=9l5rx42gqpd046s3"Register now/a.br /br /bPart 1 - Get Engaged: Donor Engagement Through Social Mediabr //biWednesday, August 4, 1:00 p.m. ETbr //iHaving a social media strategy is not its own objective. Rather, social media strategies can support your existing objectives. Reflect on your organization#39;s current objectives: Do you want to cultivate supporter relationships, build cause awareness, do online fundraising, or connect with new supporters? Those are all goals social media can help support, and this session will examine a multitude of ways to get started and how your organization can benefit.nbsp;a href="https://www.livemeeting.com/lrs/1100003672/Registration.aspx?pageName=9l5rx42gqpd046s3"Register now/a.br /br /bPart 2 - Keeping Them: Stewarding quot;One-Timequot; Donors for Lasting Supportbr //biWednesday, August 11, 1:00 p.m ETbr //iIn the wake of a disaster or other monumental events, many people who do not regularly donate to nonprofits are moved to assist with one-time gifts.nbsp; New donors flood into nonprofit databases.nbsp; What can be done to kindle that spark of compassion into a flame of philanthropy?nbsp; In a word: stewardship.nbsp; Join us to explore why retaining new donors is no trivial challenge.nbsp;a href="https://www.livemeeting.com/lrs/1100003672/Registration.aspx?pageName=9l5rx42gqpd046s3"Register now/a.br /br /bPart 3 -/bnbsp;bPyramid Power: Transitional Giving for Building Strong Fundraising Pyramidsbr //biWednesday, August 18, 1:00 p.m. ET/ibr /Data analysis suggests that many organizations have difficulty identifying transitional giving prospects: individuals emerging from the annual fund process who demonstrate potential to become mid-to-high level prospects in the years to come. History further suggests that we are often content to allow these prospects to self-identify through their first transitional gift, rather than using research to seek emerging prospects and implementing targeted development strategies to encourage more prospects to move up the giving pyramid.nbsp; Join us to discuss the concept of transitional giving and its critical contribution to fundraising and campaign success.nbsp;a href="https://www.livemeeting.com/lrs/1100003672/Registration.aspx?pageName=9l5rx42gqpd046s3"Register now/a.br /br /bPart 4 - Peak Performance: Strategic Stewardship for Planned Giving Programsbr //biWednesday, August 25, 1:00 p.m. ET/ibr /True donor stewardship begins before you know that a gift has been made and continues even after the donor has passed away.nbsp;A simple, yet strategic stewardship program welcomes your legacy givers into the organization#39;s highest ranks and provides them a two-way relationship throughout their lives.nbsp; This session will explore how building an intentional bond with these future major donors strengthens your chances for increased current giving as well as future legacy gifts.nbsp;a href="https://www.livemeeting.com/lrs/1100003672/Registration.aspx?pageName=9l5rx42gqpd046s3"Register now/a./pimg src="http://forums.blackbaud.com/aggbug.aspx?PostID=152126" width="1" height="1"

Do You Have A Donor Love Meter?
pBlackbaud#39;s chief scientist Chuck Longfield has spent more than 25 years working with nonprofits to improve their fundraising results. He#39;s a very popular speaker and one of the best people I#39;ve ever had the pleasure to work with./p
pUnderstanding donor passion is something Chuck believes is vitally important for nonprofits to succeed. He also has proven time and time again how simply calling donors and asking them why they gave can be tremendously valuable.br //p
pChuck recently spoke at the a href="http://www.nationalconvention.org.uk/"Institute of Fundraising#39;s National Convention/a in London. Howard Lake from a href="http://fundraising.co.uk/"Fundraising UK/a recorded a portion of Chuck#39;s presentation and posted it online. Here are two very good videos worth watching:br //p

Reporting Tool for Remove Social Security Employer Tax Plug-In
pIn the a href="http://forums.blackbaud.com/blogs/financialedge/archive/2010/04/06/hiring-incentives-to-restore-employment-act-plug-in.aspx"Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment Act Plug-In/a post, I let you know about the Remove Social Security Employer Tax plug-in. This plug-in removes the employer portion of Social Security taxes from unpaid calculations for qualified employees and needs to be run after each payroll calculation for the affected employees to remove the employer portion. The final piece to the puzzle is 941 reporting, which is why I#39;m writing this blog today img src="http://forums.blackbaud.com/emoticons/emotion-1.gif" alt="Smile" /. /p
pI#39;m happy to announce that we#39;ve released the Reporting Tool for Remove Social Security Employer Tax plug-in. Optimising online forms
pHave you ever wondered why you get lots of visits to your website, but very few conversions through your online forms? You may be hoping for more online donations, event registrations or email sign-ups.br //ppThere are a few simple tweaks that you can test to try to make your online forms more user friendly. Even if your forms are performing well currently, it#39;s worth reviewing these and considering some a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A/B_testing" target="_blank"A/B testing/a to determine what will bring you in the maximum results. br /br /The easier your form is to fill in, the more likely it is that your audience will make it through to the end.br /br /bText alignment/bbr /br /Even something as small as changing the alignment of the text on your online forms can make a difference. Aligning the text over the top of your form fields makes the form faster to complete, while left text alignment aids familiar or complex data entry. Right text alignment is normally used only when limited space is available.br /br /bOptional Fields/bbr /br /Consider: if it#39;s an optional field, do you really need this information? If you truly needed it, wouldn#39;t the field be mandatory? If you do choose to use optional fields, ensure that you indicate that the field is optional (and it may help your data capture efforts to state why!)br /br /bInformation Presentationbr //bbr /Like information should be presented together, and the information should be scannable. Your form should proceed in a logical sequence, and should be very easy to scan for busy users. Don#39;t make people search for information, as they#39;re likely to give up and leave your form altogether.br /bbr /Incorrect data entry/bbr /br /If someone misses a field, or fills out something incorrectly and the form rejects the submit request, how easy is it for the user to work out what#39;s going on? Try to have information aligned with the error field. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to process a form, but being unable to process it because of incorrect information and being unable to work out where this is.br /br /bProcessing buttons/bbr /br /Submission of a form should always be triggered by an emotional response - something like #39;donate now#39; or #39;make a difference#39; rather than #39;submit#39;. Avoid clinical language, and think about what your words imply.br /br /bConfirmation Pages/bbr /br /Thank the user for taking the time to fill out your form. They#39;ve taken time out of their busy day to do you a favour. Could they forward your form on to any interested friends? How can they engage with you in the future?br /br /For more detailed information, check out this presentation from Luke Wroblewski on a href="http://www.slideshare.net/psykoreactor/best-practices-for-form-design" target="_blank"Best Practices for Form Design/a. It#39;s got some great information in it.br //pimg src="http://forums.blackbaud.com/aggbug.aspx?PostID=151840" width="1" height="1"

"Giving while Living" isn't just for billionaires
pThere#39;s been a lot of talk lately about a href="http://www.gatesfoundation.org/about/Pages/bill-melinda-gates-letter.aspx"Billnbsp;and Melinda Gates#39;/a and a href="http://www.warrenbuffettcentral.com/"Warren Buffett#39;s/anbsp;push to encourage their fellow billionaires to give 50% of their net worth to philanthropy - during their lives or through their estate plans./p
pI#39;ve just returned from the a href="http://www.givingusa.org/"Giving Institute/a Summer Symposium innbsp;Park City and the a href="http://www.case.org/"CASE/a Summit for Advancement Leaders in New York City where the topic was debated.nbsp; The crux of the issue?nbsp; Is this push a good thing?/p
pI admit that, when I read about what the Gates#39;/Buffett tag team was doing (a href="http://features.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2010/06/16/gates-buffett-600-billion-dollar-philanthropy-challenge/"check out this article in Fortune/a),nbsp;my personal reaction was that this was cool, inspiring, and something that could lead to a lot of good.nbsp; But I do realize that, given what I do and who I am, I#39;m predisposed to thinking that any initiative to increase the investment made in the sector is a positive thing.nbsp; These three folks are so famous already that I can#39;t imagine they#39;re going after philanthropic dollars -- or trying to tackle malaria for that matter --nbsp;simply for the PR./p
pBut at both the meetings I attended this past week, a common, dissentingnbsp;theme arose.nbsp; The perspective is a valid one - that by focusing on billionaires (and emuonly/u/em billionaires), the Gates/Buffett team is letting other peoplenbsp;off the hook.nbsp; They#39;re making it easier for the simple millionaire to say quot;those truly rich folks have it covered.quot;nbsp; /p
pI guess I hadn#39;t thought about those situations, nbsp;but I know they DO exist, where constituents of nonprofits don#39;t make donations because they assume the handful of major donors quot;who always come throughquot; will take care of things.nbsp; As a quot;glass is half fullquot; kind of person, I don#39;t particularly like this point of view./p
pa href="http://www.nndb.com/people/494/000025419/"Cokie Roberts/a, moderating the closing session at thenbsp;CASE Summit, asked philanthropists a href="http://www.acbp.net/"Charles Bronfman/a and a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jonathan-tisch"Jonathan Tisch/a what they thought about the Gates/Buffett initiative.nbsp;nbsp;Charles Bronfman, somewhat sarcastically, said the pledge certainly didn#39;t include quot;the little guys like us.quot;nbsp; Little?nbsp; Hmm./p
pSo what can we do about it?nbsp; First, we should be honest with ourselves that some people may never choose to support the work of nonprofits.nbsp; Ok, we admitted it.nbsp; Now we can move on and work to take the essence of what the Gates/Buffett team is trying to do to a wider audience.nbsp; Expand it to others who, while nowhere near as rich, can and will play a role in driving positive change.nbsp; One speaker at the Giving Institute said that the issue was that Gates/Buffett focused on money vs. being quot;self made.quot;nbsp; So that#39;s one avenue to take.nbsp; Another is to take the message to anyone you feel seeks to make change in the world and could increase his or her philanthropic stake.nbsp; I#39;m talking about major donors of all levels (for some that begins at $1,000, for others it means $100,000).nbsp; On the other end of the scale, it means spreading the word with students who, more and more, are seeking careers in the nonprofit world or ethical, sustainable businesses.nbsp; It#39;s about being inclusive with the message, not exclusive./p
pI#39;d like to think we can quickly leave the debate behind and focus on what#39;s good about the initiative.nbsp; The nonprofit sector is a vital part of our system, our world, our communities.nbsp; Increased investment will bring challenge, sure.nbsp; But it will also bring good things.nbsp; And if we stay focused on how to channel the investment and identify the true drivers of change, well, that would just be nirvana, wouldn#39;t it?/pimg src="http://forums.blackbaud.com/aggbug.aspx?PostID=151349" width="1" height="1"

Bank Reconciliation Roundtable Roundup
pYesterday#39;s Bank Reconciliation Support Roundtable was a great success! In case you missed it, check out the PowerPoint presentation and recording on a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/support/roundtables/financialedge.aspx"The Financial Edge Roundtables/a page. Here are some of the questions your fellow FE users asked:/p
ul style="LIST-STYLE-TYPE:disc;"
liCan you go back later and change this from multiple to one? (Regarding changing the Fund setup on Bank setup)
ul style="LIST-STYLE-TYPE:circle;"
liYes, you will be able this at a later time to track from multiple funds to one.br /br //li/ul/li
liHow do you set up #39;transfer in#39; adjustments?
ul style="LIST-STYLE-TYPE:circle;"
liOn the #39;transfer out#39; adjustments#39;, you determine the bank that you would like the transfer to. This creates the bank adjustment on that bank. br /br //li/ul/li
liHow do you post bank adjustments?
ul style="LIST-STYLE-TYPE:circle;"
liGo through #39;Post adjustments to the General Ledger#39; under Administrative Tasks.br /br //li/ul/li
liWe are integrated with Raisers Edge and have to enter our RE deposits as a quot;Do Not Post quot; in Cash Management because each donation entered into RE comes over into the ledger individually and not as a lump sum for the amount of our deposit. Is this recommended?
ul style="LIST-STYLE-TYPE:circle;"
liThis is the best way to ensure that you do not have multiple adjustments in your register. You can also put the deposits together as a batch in Raisers Edge so that when you pull the deposits into Financial Edge you have one deposit in Financial Edge that agrees to the bank statement and have the income detail still there. br /br //li/ul/li
liCan you pull up a bank reconciliation report beyond the last one done?
ul style="LIST-STYLE-TYPE:circle;"
liThe system is limited to only allow you to run a bank reconciliation report for the last completed reconciliation. br /br //li/ul/li
liHow to create a journal entry to cash, without affecting the register?
ul style="LIST-STYLE-TYPE:circle;"
liPost the Journal Entry with the box to #39;create bank adjustments#39; un-checked. br /br //li/ul/li
liIf there is an unposted journal entry will this throw off the reconciliation?
ul style="LIST-STYLE-TYPE:circle;"
liUnposted journal entries will not throw off the bank reconciliation. The reconciliation only looks at the posted General Ledger balance.br /br //li/ul/li
liWhen creating a JE in General Ledger, can this JE clear automatic?
ul style="LIST-STYLE-TYPE:circle;"
liWhen you refer to clear, are you asking if it can create a bank adjustment or be marked as automatically cleared in the bank? You can check the box to create a bank adjustment but that adjustment will need to be manually cleared.br /br //li/ul/li
liWhen you post an adjustment to the GL through the bank reconciliation is there anyway to get the reference line in the GL to show the reference line of the adjustment instead of it just showing cash management?
ul style="LIST-STYLE-TYPE:circle;"
liYou can make edits through Configuration and Posting information.br /br //li/ul/li
liIs there a query you can do to find entries that the box wasn#39;t checked for? (The box to create bank adjustments)
ul style="LIST-STYLE-TYPE:circle;"
liThere is not at this time. However, you can run queries for journal entry transactions and cross reference them to an adjustment query.br /br //li/ul/li
liIf a RE batch does include both cash and credit card deposit so the cash may have cleared but the card has not yet, how to handle since only part of batch has cleared. Is the only way to create adjustment that splits the batch in 2?
ul style="LIST-STYLE-TYPE:circle;"
liIf you post the cash and credit card deposits in summary, they will create one bank adjustment (as long as the box is checked). This entry can only be cleared as a whole and not as a portion. The options are to either post the credit card and cash deposits separately and therefore create separate adjustments or do not create a bank adjustment from the batch and manually add two Do Not Post bank adjustments. br /br //li/ul/li/ul

Q2 2010 User Guide Downloads
pWe had 28,135 downloads from our User Guide pages in Q2 2010 (April 1 - June 30). That#39;s approximately 9300 downloads per month. This includes all the guides, videos, and tutorials we create and publish on the User Guide pages of a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/"www.blackbaud.com/a. /p
pIn 2009 we averaged between 20k to 25k downloads per quarter. In 2010 we are averaging between 25k to 29k per quarter. That increase can be attributed to the addition of the Fundware documentation, which was added to our website late last year. /pimg src="http://forums.blackbaud.com/aggbug.aspx?PostID=151183" width="1" height="1"
