Save a Tree...Email your Reports!

Mon, 07/19/2010 - 06:03
pHave you ever wondered, quot; Can I email my FundWare reports?quot;nbsp; Janet Swem from the Town of Deerfield has, and I bet you have too!/p pThe answer is a little more complicated than you might guess from the title.nbsp; The answer is yes, but how you accomplish this takes a bit of explaining./p pThe Twenty Pines product Web Reporter will automatically convert your reports to PDF files and allow you to email them to your coworkers, board member, etc.nbsp; You can even publish these files to your website!nbsp; If you#39;re interested in this third party product, let us know and we will get you more information./p pIf you don#39;t have Web Reporter and don#39;t mind taking a couple extra steps, you can still email reports.nbsp; You can save the Print Manager files and email them out as attachments.nbsp; The files will be opened by recipients in Notepad as text files to read or print.nbsp; Another option is to use a free PDF printer to create your own PDF files to attach to emails.nbsp; These are a good option because a PDF file can only be edited with specific software, unlike open text files./p pIf you#39;re looking for an even more streamlined and powerful option, upgrade to The Financial Edge and use Queue services.nbsp; Queue allows reports to be scheduled, run and emailed out automatically.nbsp; All you need to do is set it up!nbsp; Read more about Queue in The Financial Edge Blog, a href="http://forums.blackbaud.com/blogs/financialedge/archive/tags/Accounting+Queue/default.aspx"The Ledger/a./p pA big thank you to Janet for this Blog suggestion!nbsp; Keep ‘em coming!nbsp; img src="http://forums.blackbaud.com/emoticons/emotion-55.gif" alt="Idea" //p pnbsp;/pimg src="http://forums.blackbaud.com/aggbug.aspx?PostID=150434" width="1" height="1"

Some social marketing food for thought

Sun, 07/18/2010 - 21:10
pI attended the a href="http://www.morestrategic.com.au/" target="_blank"Sydney Social Marketing Forum/a last week, which got me thinking about the ways in which we all approach our marketing efforts./ppSocial marketing uses marketing strategies to solve social issues. The aim is to use marketing tools and techniques to create positive behaviour change./ppThe Forum covered a lot of good points that transcend just the area of social marketing however - they should be considered with any activity that falls under the umbrella of #39;marketing#39;, particularly Nonprofit marketing.br //ppAll marketing campaigns aim to influence awareness, attitudes, and finally, behaviour. No one campaign is likely to change any of these in one go however. /ppOur marketing efforts should be bound within the confines of a long term strategy - we need multiple campaigns to have any influence on awareness, let alone influence behaviour changes. It requires time. Unfortunately, time is what we all seem to have so little of these days. I know that I often need to take a step back and remember this - but it#39;s often the hardest thing to do!br //ppPartnerships can also be key, but again, I think we tend to forget about the importance of these when we#39;re bogged down simply trying to get the latest campaign out the door. Particularly in the Nonprofit sector, emphasis needs to be placed on partnerships due to the limited resources that every organisation is working with. Who can you consider working with right now that will enhance your efforts, and ultimately, your organisational mission?/ppCommunication channels should also be considered in a marketing context - as everyway you communicate to your constituents with is a potential platform for your organisation. Which communication platfroms do you currrently use? What could be enhanced? Which obvious channels are you missing? Have really considered the full potential of each? br //ppThe Forum actually threw up a lot more questions than it answered, but it was a nice reminder that we all need to take a step back, a big deep breath and actually look at what is going on around us when we#39;re not caught up in the middle of it./ppHow often do you get to do this?nbsp; br //pimg src="http://forums.blackbaud.com/aggbug.aspx?PostID=150992" width="1" height="1"

pI#39;m in Park City, Utah for the a href="http://www.givingusa.org/about_gi/index.cfm"2010 Giving Institute Summer Symposium/a. This is the first time I#39;ve spoken at this great event./p p The a href="http://www.givingusa.org/"Giving Institute/a was founded in 1935 to promote the need for professional and ethical standards of practice, and to influence the creation of laws governing philanthropy. Giving Institute has been involved in many milestones of philanthropy, including creating the a href="http://www.givingusa.org/"Giving USA Foundation/a, which reports on philanthropic trends. /p pToday, I am doing a session called bquot; Is Technology Essential to Fundraising?quot;/b that covers a lot of topics. It#39;s good to sometimes have a broader topic and a chance to talk about trends across the nonprofit sector. The session is a mix of lots of new material and some things I#39;ve presented about in the past./p pBelow are my the slides for my presentation at the Giving Institute event. /p div style="width:425px;" id="__ss_4779133"b style="display:block;margin:12px 0pt 4px;"a href="http://www.slideshare.net/smaclaughlin/is-technology-essential-to-fundraising" title="Is Technology Essential to Fundraising?"Is Technology Essential to Fundraising?/a/b object id="__sse4779133" height="355" width="425" param name="movie" value="http://static.slidesharecdn.com/swf/ssplayer2.swf?doc=maclaughlingiv1final-100717174213-phpapp01amp;rel=0amp;stripped_title=is-technology-essential-to-fundraising" param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" embed src="http://static.slidesharecdn.com/swf/ssplayer2.swf?doc=maclaughlingiv1final-100717174213-phpapp01amp;rel=0amp;stripped_title=is-technology-essential-to-fundraising" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" height="355" width="425"/object div style="padding:5px 0pt 12px;"View more a href="http://www.slideshare.net/"presentations/a from a href="http://www.slideshare.net/smaclaughlin"Steve MacLaughlin/a./div/divnbsp;A special thanks to the a href="http://www.givingusa.org/"Giving Institute/a and the a href="http://www.philanthropy.iupui.edu/"Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University/a for the opportunity to speak at their event.br /img src="http://forums.blackbaud.com/aggbug.aspx?PostID=149881" width="1" height="1"

2010 Tennessee Advancement Resources Council Conference

Fri, 07/16/2010 - 07:00
pYesterday, I was in Nashville for the a href="http://www.tarctn.org/"2010 Tennessee Advancement Resources Council Conference/a. The is group is made up schools of close to 30 colleges and universities in the state of Tennessee./p pIn the morning I held a social media workshop and in the afternoon I delivered the keynote about the bquot;Transformational Impact of Social Media.quot;/b The keynote includes some new approaches to thinking about social media from a traditional nonprofit perspective./p pUltimately, this is all about relationship building. The channel or the technology doesn#39;t change the importance of relationships. I think a lot of this gets lots in the noise, smoke, and buzz of the technology. The new new thing is usually a variation on a theme. br //p pBelow are the slides from my keynote session at the conference:/pbr / div style="width:425px;" id="__ss_4771393"strong style="display:block;margin:12px 0pt 4px;"a href="http://www.slideshare.net/smaclaughlin/transformational-impact-of-social-media" title="Transformational Impact of Social Media"Transformational Impact of Social Media/a/strongobject id="__sse4771393" height="355" width="425"param name="movie" value="http://static.slidesharecdn.com/swf/ssplayer2.swf?doc=maclaughlintarcv2final-100716084242-phpapp02amp;rel=0amp;stripped_title=transformational-impact-of-social-media"param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"embed src="http://static.slidesharecdn.com/swf/ssplayer2.swf?doc=maclaughlintarcv2final-100716084242-phpapp02amp;rel=0amp;stripped_title=transformational-impact-of-social-media" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" height="355" width="425"/objectdiv style="padding:5px 0pt 12px;"View more a href="http://www.slideshare.net/"presentations/a from a href="http://www.slideshare.net/smaclaughlin"Steve MacLaughlin/a./div/div img src="http://forums.blackbaud.com/aggbug.aspx?PostID=149880" width="1" height="1"

Introducing the Blackbaud Index of Online Giving

Thu, 07/15/2010 - 05:05
pa href="http://www.blackbaud.com/bb/index/bb-online-index.aspx"The Blackbaud Index of Online Giving/a was launched today and is the counterpart to the a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/bb/index/blackbaud-index.aspx" class=""Blackbaud Index of Charitable Giving/a that was launched last month. We#39;re really excited about adding monthly trends for online giving to this project./p a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/bb/index/bb-online-index.aspx" title="Blackbaud Index for Online Giving"img src="http://www.blackbaud.com/files/graphs/bbindex_widget_onlineindex.jpg" alt="Blackbaud Index for Online Giving" align="right" border="0" height="150" hspace="3" width="300" //a The growth of online giving over the past decade makes this a very valuable resource for nonprofit organizations and those that serve them. This is the largest and most diverse regular analysis of online giving trends.br / pbIndex Overview/bbr / a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/bb/index/bb-online-index.aspx"The Blackbaud Index of Online Giving/a is comprised of 1,787 nonprofits representing close to $400 million in 12-month online revenue. The Index is based on actual revenue statistics from nonprofit organizations using a variety of fundraising systems, both from Blackbaud and other vendors. It is reported as a three-month rolling average to account for fluctuations and changes that often happen in the nonprofit sector. The a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/bb/index/index-method.aspx" class=""Index methodology/a is available to read online as well./p pbCurrent Index Findings br //b a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/bb/index/bb-online-index.aspx"The Blackbaud Index of Online Giving/a found that overall online revenue increased by 23% for the 3 months ending May 2010 as compared to the same period in 2009. The Index includes large organizations, medium sized organizations, and smaller organizations. a href="http://www.donordigital.com/"Nick Allen/a, founder and chief strategy officer of a href="http://www.donordigital.com/"Donordigital/a, notes that quot;the new Blackbaud Index of Online Giving provides some good news in a generally dismal fundraising time.quot; You can read Nick#39;s other observations in the a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/files/resources/downloads/bb_online_index_report.pdf"Index report/a. /p pbHaiti and Online Givingbr //b The 230.2% increase for January, February, and March 2010 compared to 2009 shows the impact of online giving towards the Haitian earthquake relief efforts. This is the time period when the majority of Haiti-related online giving took place. Trends for the three-month rolling average in April and May have significantly less online giving related to the earthquake./p pbOnline Revenue Trends/bbr / This a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/files/resources/downloads/bb_online_index_report.pdf"month#39;s report/a has some other new data about online revenue trends. Blackbaud used the Index data from the past year to look at percentage of total fundraising revenue that came from online giving. We looked at total giving for almost 1,400 organizations of varied size and found that, on average, online revenue accounted for 5.7% of their overall fundraising revenue. What was more interesting was that small-sized organizations had 7.3% of total revenue come from online giving. Mid-sized nonprofits were at 7.0%, and larger organizations were slightly below the average at 5.1%. /p pPlease take some time to checkout a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/bb/index/bb-online-index.aspx"the Blackbaud Index of Online Giving/a now and over time./p img src="http://forums.blackbaud.com/aggbug.aspx?PostID=149882" width="1" height="1"

No More Wasted Label Stock

Thu, 07/15/2010 - 03:38
pHave you ever created labels in quot;Mailquot; only to find that some records were missing an address or had an incomplete address? Were you frustrated by the wasted label stock? Previewing your labels before printing is a good way to check for problems, but it can be cumbersome to scroll through dozens, or even hundreds of onscreen pages. Try this instead:/p ul style="LIST-STYLE-TYPE:disc;" liSet up your labels parameter in quot;Mailquot; with all desired filters, formatting options, etc. /li liClick on the quot;Exportquot; button on the toolbar. /li liUnder the Format option, choose one of the Excel (Extended) formats. /li liUnder the destination option choose quot;Application.quot; /li liClick the quot;OKquot; button. /li liOn the quot;Format Optionsquot; screen, select the quot;Tabular format (Arrange all objects in one area into one row)quot; radio button. /li liClick the quot;OKquot; button. /li/ul pNow your labels data will appear in Excel where the data can easily be sorted to identify missing data, empty address elements, etc. - making it much easier to find those labels that need to be removed from the run. pEnjoy!/pimg src="http://forums.blackbaud.com/aggbug.aspx?PostID=150370" width="1" height="1"

Getting started with the RE7 API and VB.NET (Part I)

Wed, 07/14/2010 - 08:00
pIf you#39;ve tried looking for resources to customize The Raiser#39;s Edge 7 using .NET, you may find a limited selection. Most of the code samples provided by Developer Support and on a title="Knowledgebase" href="http://www.blackbaud.com/kb/index?page=home" target="_blank"Knowledgebase/a are written in Visual Basic 6. Yes, Visual Basic 6 is not exactly cutting edge technology but many developers use VBA for customizations inside The Raiser#39;s Edge 7. VBAnbsp;uses the same syntax as Visual Basic 6 so this allows the same code samples to be relevant for both VBA and API. There are also some challenges in leveraging a COM API through .NET managed code. /p pIn this series of blog posts, I#39;d like to start at the beginning and walk through some of the basics around getting a .NET project started and also some things to be aware of. I would also recommend checking out a title="Building a Bare-bones RE7 Plugin" href="http://labs.blackbaud.com/NetCommunity/Page.aspx?pid=205" target="_blank"Building a Bare-bones RE7 Plugin/anbsp;for a full code sample of building a plug-in using .NET./p pTo begin, you#39;ll need to have The Raiser#39;s Edge 7 and Visual Studio installed. /p pCreate a new project. In my example, I#39;m creating a new Windows Forms Application but many of the concepts will be similar for other projects such as web applications. /p pimg style="WIDTH:951px;HEIGHT:658px;" title="NewProject" alt="NewProject" src="http://forums.blackbaud.com/blogs/infinity/ScreenShots/RE7API1/NewProject.png" width="951" height="658" //p pNext add a reference to the RE7:API library. Blackbaud Developer Support recommend referencing Blackbaud.PIA.RE7.BBREAPI.dll. Report Roundup: The Past Due Report

Mon, 07/12/2010 - 13:43
pa href="http://blog.lib.umn.edu/myee/architecture/Picture1.gif" target="_blank"img style="WIDTH:453px;HEIGHT:330px;" alt="whiterabbit" hspace="50" src="http://blog.lib.umn.edu/myee/architecture/Picture1.gif" align="right" border="0" //a/p pa href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Rabbit" target="_new"Rabbits in waistcoats/a aren#39;t the only ones who struggle with punctuality. Sometimes, sending a href="http://forums.blackbaud.com/blogs/raisersedge/archive/2008/11/17/be-kind-remind.aspx" target="_new"pledge reminder/a doesn#39;t do the trick, and a constituent will fall behind on their payment schedule. One way to find constituents who have over due pledge payments is the Past Due Report./p pThe Past Due Report lists pledge payments past due as of a specific date and categorizes them by the number of days past due for up to five past due periods. The detail report shows the constituent name, the amount past due, and the type of gift that is past due. The summary report provides a total of the amount past due for each fund./p pTo run the report Select Reports, Pledge Reports, Past Due Pledge Report. On the General tab, the Gifts Made After date is the date of the oldest pledge and the Past Due as of date is the date at which the pledges were considered past due. On the Filters tab, filter the report by appeals, campaigns, constituent codes, or funds. On the Gift Types tab, select what gift types to includ in the report. The available gift types are Pledge, MG Pledge, and Recurring Gift. On the Attributes tab, include or exclude records based on constituent or gift attributes. If you include a selected a query on the General tab, the Attributes tab only includes or excludes records in the source query./p pYou can select up to five past due periods on the Report Periods tab. The days past due are calculated base on the Past Due as of date from the General tab, and the default periods are 0 - 30 days, 31 - 60 days, 61 - 90 days, 91 - 180 days, and 181 days and over. You can edit the date ranges and headers by typing new values into the appropriate cells on the Report Period tab./p pOn the Columns tab, you can /stronga href="http://www.blackbaud.com/kb/index?page=contentamp;id=BB19748" target="_new"edit columns/a on the report. All columns included on the Columns tab are optional report columns. The Detail report columns are Constituent Name, Date, Type, Amount, Fund, Days Past Due, and Totals for each report period. The Date, Type, Amount, and Fund all refer to the original gift, while the Days Past Due refer to the past due payments./p pThe type column uses these codes for the different kinds of gifts:br /br / ul style="LIST-STYLE-TYPE:circle;" liPL = Master Pledge/li liPL A2 = Pledge 2 Annual Installments/li liPL A3 = Pledge 3 Annual Installments/li liPL SA3 = Pledge 3 Semi-Annual Installments/li liPL Q4 = Pledge 4 Quarterly Installments/li liPL BM5 = Pledge 5 Bimonthly Installments/li liPL M6 = Pledge 6 Monthly Installments/li liPL SM7 = Pledge 7 Semi-Monthly Installments/li liPL BW8 = Pledge 8 Biweekly Installments/li liPL W9 = Pledge 9 Weekly Installments/li liPL I10 = Pledge 10 Irregular Installments/li liREC = Recurring Gift, format follows above; PL is replaced with REC/li liMatching Gift Pledge appears as above with an MG before the pledge type (for example, MG PL)/li/ulbr /The Summary report is broken down by Fund and displays the both the Fund ID and Description, as well as summaries of Days Past Due and Totals for the report periods. pWhen running the report in Detail, the Ind. Address amp; Org. Address:/strong tabs are available. Select how to handle constituent addresses. For more information, refer to a style="TEXT-DECORATION:underline;" href="http://www.blackbaud.com/kb/index?page=contentamp;id=BB518"address processing/a.On the Format tab, you can choose how constituent names will appear in the report by going to Name Formats, Individual and selecting the appropriate a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/kb/index?page=contentamp;id=BB111314" target="_new"Addressee/Salutation to Use option/a. Once you have made all of your selections, click the Preview or Print button to process the report./p pThis information is also in Knowledgebase solution a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/kb/index?page=contentamp;id=BB17780" target="_new"BB17780/a. Do you have a best practice for or interesting way of using the Past Due Report? Update Like a Pro

Mon, 07/12/2010 - 08:31
pToday#39;s post is dedicated to you IT people out there! We frequently get the call, quot; How to I update to the latest versionquot; or quot; This patch resolves my issue, but I don#39;t know how to install it...Helpquot;. There are several variations of this question, but the answer is always the same. We#39;re all busy people, so let#39;s just dive right in./p pBefore you install an update or patch, review the a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/support/guides/fe.aspx"Update Guide/a and the a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/files/sysreqs/fereqs.pdf"system requirements/a if you are updating to a new version. You also need to make a a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/kb/index?page=contentamp;id=BB94455"backup/a of your database. This is a safety step, but one that is quick and can save you a lot of headaches./p pNow you#39;re ready to log into the server as a user with a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/kb/index?page=contentamp;id=BB10978"local administrator rights/a and a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/support/downloads/downloads.aspx"download/a the file. Double-click the downloaded file and save the contents to the desktop. An Install folder will be included with the extracted contents. Open the Install folder, double click setup.exe, which will launch the installation wizard, and then follow the prompts. br /strongNote:/strong If you installed an update, make sure you also install the latest patch./p pNow that the update and patch are installed on your server, it#39;s time to push them out to workstations. On each workstation, log in as a user with a minimum of power user rights. Exit and sign out of all programs, especially Microsoft Outlook, disable any anti-virus software, and log into FE. You#39;ll receive the prompt, quot;System changes require that your database be updated at this time. So you want to continue?quot;. Click Yes to begin the update. When it#39;s complete, FE will open to your default page. If the update does not begin or you are not prompted to install the update, a href="http://www.blackbaud.com/kb/index?page=contentamp;id=BB57039"manually update the workstation/a by running Setup.exe from the Deploy folder on the server. You can verify the update and patch were installed successfully by selecting Help, About from the menu bar; the version will be listed there./p pLeave a comment with your updating questions.nbsp; We#39;ll work together tonbsp;post the answer.nbsp;Talk to you soon! /pimg src="http://forums.blackbaud.com/aggbug.aspx?PostID=149925" width="1" height="1"
