Researchers Develop "Tea Bag" Water Filter

/. - Sun, 09/05/2010 - 07:53
cybernanga writes "A group of researchers in South Africa has developed a filter that can purify water straight from the bottle. The filter sits inside a tube fitted on top of a bottle and purifies water as it is poured on a cup. From the article: 'The designer behind the filter, Dr Eugene Cloete, from the Stellenbosch University in South Africa, says the filter is only as big as an ordinary tea bag. He says the product is cost-effective and easy to use. "We are coming in here at the fraction of the cost of anything else that is currently on the market," says Dr Cloete on BBC World Service.'"pa href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fscience.slashdot.org%2Fstory%2F10%2F09%2F05%2F1239219%2FResearchers-Develop-Tea-Bag-Water-Filter" target="_blank" title="Share on Facebook"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png"/a a href="http://twitter.com/home?status=Researchers+Develop+%22Tea+Bag%22+Water+Filter%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FaH9mcx" target="_blank" title="Share on Twitter"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png"/a/ppa href="http://science.slashdot.org/story/10/09/05/1239219/Researchers-Develop-Tea-Bag-Water-Filter?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./piframe src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?op=discussamp;id=1777680amp;smallembed=1" style="height: 300px; width: 100%; border: none;"/iframeimg width='1' height='1' src='http://slashdot.feedsportal.com/c/32909/f/530758/s/d722e90/mf.gif' border='0'/ pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/LSXtw9b22yNlAKPLDmeNeEnGcq8/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/LSXtw9b22yNlAKPLDmeNeEnGcq8/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/LSXtw9b22yNlAKPLDmeNeEnGcq8/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/LSXtw9b22yNlAKPLDmeNeEnGcq8/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/sr-8QFo49Jg" height="1" width="1"/

Judging You By the Online Company You Keep

/. - Sun, 09/05/2010 - 06:43
theodp writes "Network analysis uses data about your social network interactions to make assumptions and predictions about your behavior. The Economist notes the upside for companies looking to sell products. But don't forget about the downside, warns Adrian Chen, of living in a world where network analysis is used by financial firms to determine risky borrowers by looking at social ties, or by Internet businesses to determine which customers are more equal than others (nice to see Microsoft's back on the forefront of some tech!). Leaders Aren't Being Made At Tech Firms

/. - Sun, 09/05/2010 - 05:24
theodp writes "In this article Vivek Wadhwa laments that short shrift is paid to management training these days at many high-tech firms. You can't be born with the skills needed to plan projects, adhere to EEOC guidelines, prepare budgets and manage finances, or to know the intricacies of business and IP law, says Wadhwa. All this has to be learned. Stepping up to address the problems of 'engineering without leadership,' which may include morale problems, missed deadlines, customer-support disasters, and high turnover, are programs like UC Berkeley's Engineering Leadership Program and Duke's Masters of Engineering Management Program, which aim to teach product management, entrepreneurial thinking, leadership, finance, team building, business management, and motivation to techies."pa href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Ftech.slashdot.org%2Fstory%2F10%2F09%2F05%2F0141205%2FLeaders-Arent-Being-Made-At-Tech-Firms" target="_blank" title="Share on Facebook"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png"/a a href="http://twitter.com/home?status=Leaders+Aren't+Being+Made+At+Tech+Firms%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FckjdGp" target="_blank" title="Share on Twitter"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png"/a/ppa href="http://tech.slashdot.org/story/10/09/05/0141205/Leaders-Arent-Being-Made-At-Tech-Firms?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./piframe src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?op=discussamp;id=1777442amp;smallembed=1" style="height: 300px; width: 100%; border: none;"/iframeimg width='1' height='1' src='http://slashdot.feedsportal.com/c/32909/f/530758/s/d715ee5/mf.gif' border='0'/ pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/f8oz_Allr3mqD0n34HpGPo8rhCM/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/f8oz_Allr3mqD0n34HpGPo8rhCM/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/f8oz_Allr3mqD0n34HpGPo8rhCM/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/f8oz_Allr3mqD0n34HpGPo8rhCM/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/IC2y_DzZRL8" height="1" width="1"/

No Crackdown but Questions in Europe About Data Protection and the Cloud

ReadWriteWeb - Sun, 09/05/2010 - 00:18
pimg alt="eulogo.jpeg" src="http://www.readwriteweb.com/cloud/assets_c/2010/09/eulogo-thumb-150x97-21548.jpeg" width="150" height="97" /German authorities have recently expressed skepticism about cloud computing and the potential it has for breaking data protection laws./p pAccording to the a href="http://www.infolawgroup.com/2010/08/articles/eu-1/european-reservations/"Information Law Group/a, there is no imminent danger of a European crackdown but legal experts are advising international companies to address the potential concerns in their planning and operations./p p align="right"emSponsor/embr /a href='http://d.ads.readwriteweb.com/ck.php?n=21646amp;cb=21646' target='_blank'img src='http://d.ads.readwriteweb.com/avw.php?zoneid=14amp;cb=21646amp;n=21646' border='0' alt='' //a/p pThe controversy stems from Dr. Thilo Weichert, head of the data protection commission in the northernmost German state of Schleswig-Holstein. Weichert is calling for the abolition of the a href="http://www.export.gov/safeharbor/"Safe Harbor/a framework and doubts the ability of companies to protect the rights of Europeans, who enjoy some of the strongest personal privacy laws in the world./p pAccording to the Information Law Group, the Safe Harbor Framework was "developed jointly by the European Commission and the US Department of Commerce, under which American companies can publicly certify compliance with a standard set of Safe Harbor Privacy Principles approved by the European Commission and enforced by American regulators, predominantly the Federal Trade Commission." /p pThe concerns about data privacy are also felt across Europe. Most of the tension arise from how personal data is stored in the Untied States, where privacy laws are less comprehensive./p pEuropean law is fairly meticulous on the matter of data privacy. There are a number of ways that a customer needs to be notified about how their information is being processed. The belief is that on many occasions, customers are not informed at all when using SaaS services and cloud computing services. Still, there have been no formal complaints issued against cloud computing providers./p pThe concerns from Germany do come at a time when Europe is beginning to review data protection laws that have been on the books for the past 15 years. Comments have been submitted to the European Commission, which has decided to push back any ruling until mid-2011 due to the varying approaches European countries have been taking about data privacy enforcement. According to the Information Law Group, the commission also want to examine how best to apply the general principles of the law in an "increasingly global, networked, and distributed computing environment."/p pThe law group advises companies to make sure they are compliant by "handling European employee data in centralized enterprise resource management systems or outsourced applications."/p pOutsourced applications could be any variety of services. But due to the general tone in Europe right now, companies need to make sure cloud computing providers can prove they are compliant. This can be difficult at times as providers are sometimes hesitant about disclosing locations or sub-contractors. If they can't, then it's time to start looking at other options./p pFurther, the Information Law Group says it's important that customers check to see if United States vendors, including cloud service providers, "are Safe Harbor certified, or alternatively use EU-approved standard contract clauses."/p pThis issue shows again why transparency and standardized policies will be increasingly important to develop in the cloud computing market. European authorities have a reputation for strict data protection requirements. That's not going to change. It's a just a question what effect the law will have on the technology itself as privacy takes center stage./p stronga href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/cloud/2010/09/tension-are-increasing-in-euro.php#comments-open"Discuss/a/strong pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/rHjFvdpCI1ZHVb0PnbbbBlOl3Q8/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/rHjFvdpCI1ZHVb0PnbbbBlOl3Q8/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/rHjFvdpCI1ZHVb0PnbbbBlOl3Q8/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/rHjFvdpCI1ZHVb0PnbbbBlOl3Q8/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pdiv class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/readwriteweb?a=M-Tdw8Ov4fE:-LOA-tN-RMg:FFnlKYwJmN0"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/readwriteweb?d=FFnlKYwJmN0" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/readwriteweb?a=M-Tdw8Ov4fE:-LOA-tN-RMg:Ij26kaj3iuU"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/readwriteweb?d=Ij26kaj3iuU" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/readwriteweb?a=M-Tdw8Ov4fE:-LOA-tN-RMg:C2pbw5bZMiI"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/readwriteweb?d=C2pbw5bZMiI" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/readwriteweb?a=M-Tdw8Ov4fE:-LOA-tN-RMg:yIl2AUoC8zA"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/readwriteweb?d=yIl2AUoC8zA" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/readwriteweb?a=M-Tdw8Ov4fE:-LOA-tN-RMg:V_sGLiPBpWU"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/readwriteweb?i=M-Tdw8Ov4fE:-LOA-tN-RMg:V_sGLiPBpWU" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/readwriteweb?a=M-Tdw8Ov4fE:-LOA-tN-RMg:gIN9vFwOqvQ"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/readwriteweb?i=M-Tdw8Ov4fE:-LOA-tN-RMg:gIN9vFwOqvQ" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/readwriteweb?a=M-Tdw8Ov4fE:-LOA-tN-RMg:F7zBnMyn0Lo"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/readwriteweb?i=M-Tdw8Ov4fE:-LOA-tN-RMg:F7zBnMyn0Lo" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/readwriteweb?a=M-Tdw8Ov4fE:-LOA-tN-RMg:OqabYuBsmOY"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/readwriteweb?d=OqabYuBsmOY" border="0"/img/a /divimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/readwriteweb/~4/M-Tdw8Ov4fE" height="1" width="1"/

Dubai's Police Chief Calls BlackBerry a Spy Tool

/. - Sat, 09/04/2010 - 23:23
crimeandpunishment writes "Does the battle over the Blackberry ban in the United Arab Emirates have its roots in a spy story? Dubai's police chief says concern over espionage (specifically, by the US and Israel) led to the decision to limit BlackBerry services. The UAE says it will block BlackBerry email, messaging, and web services on October 11th unless it gets access to encrypted data. Comments by Lt. Gen. Dahi Khalfan Tamim are often seen as reflecting the views of Dubai's leadership, and would appear to indicate a very hard line in talks with Research in Motion."pa href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fit.slashdot.org%2Fstory%2F10%2F09%2F05%2F0125211%2FDubais-Police-Chief-Calls-BlackBerry-a-Spy-Tool" target="_blank" title="Share on Facebook"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png"/a a href="http://twitter.com/home?status=Dubai's+Police+Chief+Calls+BlackBerry+a+Spy+Tool%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2Faullak" target="_blank" title="Share on Twitter"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png"/a/ppa href="http://it.slashdot.org/story/10/09/05/0125211/Dubais-Police-Chief-Calls-BlackBerry-a-Spy-Tool?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./piframe src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?op=discussamp;id=1777434amp;smallembed=1" style="height: 300px; width: 100%; border: none;"/iframeimg width='1' height='1' src='http://slashdot.feedsportal.com/c/32909/f/530758/s/d6f7ae3/mf.gif' border='0'/ pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/f2V9_E2hL-DBANgW6nyQHw1AajM/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/f2V9_E2hL-DBANgW6nyQHw1AajM/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/f2V9_E2hL-DBANgW6nyQHw1AajM/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/f2V9_E2hL-DBANgW6nyQHw1AajM/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/w-dIjNNtT8A" height="1" width="1"/

Radiohead Helps Fans Make Crowd-Sourced Live Show DVD

/. - Sat, 09/04/2010 - 20:25
Kilrah_il writes "After having a go with a Name-Your-Price album and an open-source video, Radiohead is again breaking new ground, this time with a fan-based initiative. A group of fans went to one of the band's shows in Prague, each shooting the show from a different angle. By editing it all together and adding audio from the original masters provided by the band, they have created a video of the show that is 'Strictly not for sale mdash; By the fans for the fans,' adding, 'Please share and enjoy.' Can this be the future of live show videos?"pa href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fnews.slashdot.org%2Fstory%2F10%2F09%2F05%2F0044238%2FRadiohead-Helps-Fans-Make-Crowd-Sourced-Live-Show-DVD" target="_blank" title="Share on Facebook"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png"/a a href="http://twitter.com/home?status=Radiohead+Helps+Fans+Make+Crowd-Sourced+Live+Show+DVD%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FbtaHoD" target="_blank" title="Share on Twitter"img src="http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png"/a/ppa href="http://news.slashdot.org/story/10/09/05/0044238/Radiohead-Helps-Fans-Make-Crowd-Sourced-Live-Show-DVD?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./piframe src="http://slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?op=discussamp;id=1777426amp;smallembed=1" style="height: 300px; width: 100%; border: none;"/iframeimg width='1' height='1' src='http://slashdot.feedsportal.com/c/32909/f/530758/s/d6edbc8/mf.gif' border='0'/ pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/K6p3P549HtkmGkBXnZd1-RS8JDY/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/K6p3P549HtkmGkBXnZd1-RS8JDY/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/K6p3P549HtkmGkBXnZd1-RS8JDY/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/K6p3P549HtkmGkBXnZd1-RS8JDY/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~4/CapHxeYjNMg" height="1" width="1"/

Wikipedia Founder Says Apps, Not Paywalls, Could Save the News

Mashable - Sat, 09/04/2010 - 20:11

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said in an interview with the Associated Press yesterday that paid apps like those found on the iPhone, Android and iPad could help financially troubled news organizations, but he didn’t have anything positive to say about charging for content on the web.

On the other hand, he’s not optimistic about other micropayment plans wherein publications would charge users to access individual articles because at present there is not a centralized and widespread payment system as there is with Apple’s services (iTunes, iBooks and the App Store) or the Android Market.

“If I just click on my iPad, and it’s billed on my normal bill, that micropayment model makes it possible for people to have an impulse purchase,” he said. Apple already has his payment information from the get go, and the creator of each app can use Apple’s billing system for in-app purchases.

That’s one of the reasons Wales believes app stores could be beneficial for the news industry. “The apps model — the iPad app, the Kindle — does provide new and interesting opportunities for newspapers.”

We’ve heard rumors in the past that Google has a unified micropayments system in the works that could do the same for desktop content, but it hasn’t happened yet.

Wikipedia is not a commercial enterprise, but Wales’s current venture Wikia is ad-supported.

The iWatch Is Real: It’s the New iPod Nano [PIC]

Mashable - Sat, 09/04/2010 - 19:21

Apple makes computers, tablets, phones, portable media players, TV set-top-boxes, displays and a dozen other things, but to date, it hasn’t made a wristwatch. Oh, wait, actually, it has! It’s called “the new iPod nano.”

Sure, battery life will be a problem when you leave that screen on the whole time, but you could just act like it’s an LED watch and it’s nighttime by hitting the button to see the time.

People have dreamed of fancy computer watches for a long time, and they’ve recently become a reality in a sufficiently usable form. LG started the latest upswing trend by introducing a watch phone concept at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show.

Apple may not have intended the nano to be used this way, but the above Flickr photo from Kei Ogikubo leads us to believe that maybe tablets aren’t the only geek fantasy that Apple is recently the first to get right!
